Chinese Long March 7A rocket explodes 85 seconds after launch in setback for Beijing's space ambitions
A Chinese rocket exploded 85 seconds after launch on Monday, destroying a communications satellite and dealing a blow to Beijing's rapidly expanding space programme as it seeks to challenge SpaceX's dominance in orbital delivery.
The Long March 7A rocket erupted in a fiery ball above the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan province, sending debris tumbling toward the ground as shocked crowds watched from below. State broadcaster Xinhua confirmed the rocket experienced an anomaly during flight and the mission failed, with authorities now investigating the cause.
Monday's failure marks only the second malfunction in the Long March 7A's history since its maiden flight in March 2020, which also ended in disaster due to a loss of pressure that led to engine failure. The rocket has completed 17 flights overall as of July 2026, giving it a relatively strong track record despite the two high-profile setbacks.
China's $19 billion space investment
The explosion comes at a critical juncture for China's space ambitions. Beijing spent over $19 billion on space programmes in 2024, making it the world's second-largest space spender after the United States, which allocated nearly $80 billion. President Xi Jinping has made achieving China's "space dream" a national priority, with numerous state-owned and private firms working to close the gap with Elon Musk's SpaceX.

The destroyed payload was identified as Zhongxing-4B, also known as ChinaSat-4B, a high-orbit communications satellite from the same series as ChinaSat-4A launched in 2024. Such satellites can provide broadcasting and telecommunications services across vast areas, including remote regions beyond terrestrial network coverage, though the specific role of ChinaSat-4B remains unclear.
Strategic launch site and recent successes
The Wenchang facility, located at 19 degrees north of the equator, was chosen for its low latitude, which allows rockets to launch larger payloads while consuming less fuel to reach orbit. This geographic advantage makes it China's premier site for commercial and heavy-lift launches.
Despite Monday's setback, China has notched significant achievements in recent months. In July, the country successfully recovered the first stage of its Long March 10B rocket using a net capture system on a floating platform, marking the first time China has recovered an orbital-class rocket booster in a controlled manner. The breakthrough brings Beijing closer to the reusable launch capabilities that have given SpaceX a competitive edge.
Lunar ambitions remain on track
Experts said the Long March 7A failure is unlikely to derail China's upcoming Chang'e-7 lunar mission, which arrived at Wenchang in April 2026 and is scheduled to launch in the second half of this year, potentially in August. That mission will use the much larger Long March 5 rocket to target the Moon's south pole, specifically the illuminated rim of Shackleton crater, where the spacecraft will search for water ice trapped in permanently shadowed craters.
China aims to land astronauts on the Moon before 2030, putting it in direct competition with NASA's Artemis programme to return humans to the lunar surface. Blaine Curcio, founder of Orbital Gateway Consulting, described Monday's explosion as "not a great development" for the Long March 7A programme but said it was unlikely to impact China's wider launch ambitions.
The Long March 7A is a medium-lift rocket primarily used to deploy communications satellites into high orbit, rather than the vast constellations of satellites China is placing in low-Earth orbit. Its role differs from the Long March 5, which handles heavier scientific and exploration payloads including lunar missions.
